What Is A Habit and Why Are They So Hard To Break?

A habit is a physical groove in the brain, the more consistently we repeat the same action, a physical groove is formed in the brain and the longer we have the habit the deeper the groove gets. The deeper the groove, the harder it is to break the habit, causing automatic reactions and responses to our experiences before we consciously consider the best response based on the situation.

In truth a habit cannot be broken by wishing it away, it must be replaced with another action that will eventually become the new habit, one that serves our higher good. The new habit is generally the exact opposite response of the old habit.

Breaking habits requires extreme perseverance and focus to REMEMBER to do it, and not forget that we are retraining our brain to form new habits that prevent us from unconsciously reacting to external stimuli reducing us to nothing more than a robot, controlled by triggers that we are generally unbeknownst to us.

The good thing is that even if we forget about the new habit and catch ourselves halfway through, or have already responded with the old habit and remember at that point, it still helps to create the new habit groove because we remembered.

Habit Changing Tips:

  • Make notes of your new habit and place it in places that you will notice.
  • Make your notes colorful – something that stands out in the room.
  • Move the notes to different places periodically when something is in the same place for long periods – it blends in with the room and we don’t see it anymore.
  • Meditate on them before falling asleep.
  • Meditate on them after rising in the AM.
  • Be Kind To Yourself During The Process.
