DIY: Natural & Healthy Nail Care Tips

Our concept of nail care in this society is one of pure aesthetics, nail tips, acrylic nails, and intricate artwork. But the reality is that our nails reveal far more about our health than we know.

DAILY NAIL & CUTICLE MOISTURIZER
Add 1 Tablespoon to 2 ounces of a mineral oil-free facial moisturizer, mix well. several times a day to hand nails and cuticles.

HORSETAIL NAIL STRAIGHTENER
The herb horsetail contains high amounts of natural silica, silica helps to strengthen connective tissue in the hair, nails, and skin.

  1. Add 3 teabags to 2 1/2 cups of boiling water, reduce heat to simmer. Simmer gently, covered for 30 minutes.
  2. Remove from heat and allow to steep for another 30 minutes.
  3. Remove teabags and squeeze dry.
  4. Every two days, soak fingernails in warm sesame oil for 15 minutes, then in horsetail mixture for another 15 minutes.
  5. Store unused tea in a tightly closed container in the refrigerator. Remaining sesame oil may be stored on the shelf, in a tightly closed container out of direct sunlight.

HONEY & SESAME MOISTURIZING TREATMENT
Moisturize your hands, nails, and cuticles with this quick but effective moisturizer.

  1. Warm 3 Tablespoons of raw honey, and 1 Tablespoon of sesame oil in a container large enough for both hands to warm, mix well.
  2. Apply a small amount to both hands, then soak clean unpolished nails in the mixture for 20 minutes.
  3. Rinse hands first with warm water, then cold water.
  4. Lightly pat dry, massage oil into hands

CALLOUS REMOVING FOOT SOAK & SCRUB

You Will Need
1/2 cup Epsom salt
1/2 cup baking soda
1/4 cup of salt (do not add to soak water)
1 cap full of shampoo
1 callous removing implement
2 plastic bags (large enough to cover feet)
Sesame oil
Lavender essential oil
1 pair of thick cotton or wool soaks
Several large towels
1 bucket large enough to allow the legs to soak mid-calf (5-gallon bucket is perfect)

Directions

  1. Prepare work area; lay heavy rug or towel on floor to protect from water.
  2. Add 1/2 cup of Epsom salt, 1/2 cup of baking soda, shampoo and 5 drops of lavender essential oil to bucket of water as warm as you can stand. Do not over fill bucket.
  3. Soak feet for at least 45 minutes, add additional warm water if needed.
  4. Remove from water one foot at a time, exfoliate dead skin with a callous remover implement. Once done place foot back to soak water.
  5. Repeat on second foot, when complete remove both feet from water, pat dry.
  6. Take a hand full of salt in wet hands apply to foot and gently rub into foot and ankles to remove dead skin. Return foot to bucket.
  7. Repeat process on second foot.
  8. Rinse feet with running water in tub.
  9. Pat dry, place feet on towel or rug, while seated, apply an ample amount of sesame oil to both feet, cover with plastic bags, put on a thick pair of cotton or wool soaks. Allow to moisturize for an hour or longer.


PRECAUTIONS:

  • Be very mindful not to slip and fall when using the oil.
  • Do not walk with just the plastic on your feet — put soaks over plastic bags.
