Six Food Flavors

In order to keep the systems of our body in balance, each meal must contain each of the six flavor types of food. While these foods benefit our body and improve our health they must be eaten in moderation and in balance with all six flavors, otherwise, we will create imbalances within our bodies.

Sweet – build tissue, calms nerves example of sweet foods are fruits and foods high in natural sugars, such as dates, raisins, and other dried foods. Keep in mind that refined sugars such as white sugar does not provide the correct sugars the body requires. White sugar functions as a poison in the body.

Bitter – detoxes the liver and lightens tissue. Examples are dark leafy greens such as dandelion, turnip, escarole, and spices.

Sour – cleanse tissue, increases the absorption of minerals. Examples: sour fruits, yogurt, and fermented foods.

Salty – naturally salty foods help to conduct nerve impulses, contract and relax muscles, and help maintain the proper balance of water and minerals. Examples: natural salt, sea vegetables, and celery.

Pungent – pungent foods help stimulate digestion and metabolism. Examples are chili peppers, garlic, herbs, and spices.

Astringent – absorbs water, tightens tissue, and dries fat. Examples: legumes raw fruits and vegetables, herbs, okra, pomegranates, and parsley.
